SIR LOWRY'S PASS

This is the most well known of all the passes in South Africa. It is a popular launching spot for Paragliders.

HERMANUS

Hermanus was named after Hermanus Pieters. A popular seaside resort town featuring a railway station with no railway line. It is the only town in the country that has an official whale crier. Whales can be seen during the peak whale season of September and October. At the Old Harbour Museum the eerie songs of the whales can be heard via an underwater microphone attached to sonar buoy in Walker Bay. One is afforded spectacular views of Walker Bay from the Rotary Mountain Way.

MISSION STATION AT ELIM

The mission station at Elim was founded in 1824 by Moravian missionaries. The whitewashed, thatched cottages are representative of this period. The towns watermill built in 1828 is a national monument Elim's German made church clock first started ticking in 1764 and still keeps good time. Fine examples of fynbos can be seen.

L'AGULHAS LIGHTHOUSE

Set on a bleak and rugged coast stands the limestone lighthouse of Agulhas. A graveyard of shipwrecks reflect the power of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans at this southernmost tip of Africa. The area is known as the Cape of Storms. The lighthouse has a museum from which one can view the ancient tidal fish traps made by the Khoi-Khoi people.

BREDASDORP

Bredasdorp is surrounded by wheat fields and sheep farms. It started out in 1837 when the farm Langefontein was sold to the Dutch Reformed Church. The town museum complex contains a restored Rectory furnished with pieces of furniture from shipwrecks.
The Shipwreck Museum exhibits some items from the wrecks off our coast. One of the most famous wrecks is the Birkenhead which went down in 1852 at Danger Point. The term "women and children first" was coined during the sinking of this ship.
