TOUR 11 SAN BUSHMAN PAINTING

OSTRICH RANCH

One can see the largest birds on earth, their glorious feathers and enormous eggs. There is a great view of Table Mountain. One can experience an on- site African Village.

MALMESBURY

Named after the Earl of MALMESBURY this is the largest grain-distributing centre in Southern Africa. The area is known as the SWARTLAND because of the deep rich colour of the soil. PIEKENIERS KLOOF PASS - The view-site at 519m offers a look at the rolling valleys of the grain country. The landscape dramatically changes as one passes through the citrus country. In 1660 the first European explorers came across herds of up to 300 elephants and named the river here the OLIFANTS RIVER.

CITRUSDAL was founded by the Dutch Reformed church in 1916 and is the heart of the citrus industry. In 1814 ‘Dissels Vlei’ was renamed in honour of the Earl of CLANWILLIAM.

PAKHUIS PASS features a spectacular landscape. One may visit the grave-site of the renowned writer and individualist, Dr Louis Leipoldt.

ALPHA EXELSIOR

This is real country hospitality featuring comfortable self-catering cottages.
Your hosts will prepare a South African “Braai” for dinner. After retiring to your cottage the only sounds that will interrupt the silence will be crickets and the sunbirds at dawn. Nearby is a canyon with a breathtaking view of a waterfall far below.
Your hosts will also prepare a South African ‘Potjie’ (cooked in a cast-iron pot, the way our pioneers did it). On a moonless sky, one can experience the heavens as seldom seen in the city.

THE SEVILLA TRAIL

An approximate 2 ½ hours easy walking trail will lead us to at least 10 Bushmen painting sites. (Don’t forget your hat and sun protection lotion).

WUPPERTAL

This is an attractive oasis in the otherwise rugged wilderness. WUPPERTAL has its origins in 1829 when it was named after the valley at the WUPPER RIVER in the RHINELAND. This is where the RHENISH MISSION INSTITUTE was situated. One can visit the shoe makers that produce the ‘VELDSKOEN’ veld shoes.
